Yummy Rainbow Cupcakes

On Tuesday I came home to this beautiful creation!
Andy spent almost 3 hours creating these little delicious beauties!
Here is what he did used.
1 box of vanilla cake mix (made to box specifications)
1 tub of vanilla frosting
12 cupcake liners
1 box of food coloring-He used neon and basic colors
Frosting piping tool
First, he preheated the oven and lined his cupcake pan.
Then, he made the cake mix. After it was made, he divided the mix up into 6 different bowls. He added food coloring to each bowl to make red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple batter.
To make the rainbow effect in each cupcake, he layered the purple first and spread it evenly in the bottom of each cupcake liner, tapping the pan to remove bubbles. He then layered each color evenly on top of each other in a backwards rainbow order. He was able to make 12 cupcakes.
Bake according to the instructions on the box.
While the cupcakes were baking he started to create his amazing neon frosting. To do this, he divided the frosting into 4 different bowls and added neon food coloring to get pink, purple, blue and green frosting. He then took each color and put it into a plastic bag and then piped it into our plastic cake piping tool thing. I honestly had no idea we had the thing.
| Imagine a plastic version of this. |
After he piped each color into the plastic circle tube in four separate areas, and the cupcakes were done and cooled, he used the nifty star tip to pipe the neat frosting on top of the cupcakes.
It was a pretty rough day, and coming home to these cupcakes made everything better!

First Columbus Crew Game layout
On Saturday, March 16 we headed to the first Crew game of the season. We were unsure if we could get season tickets again this year, but about 2 weeks before the season started we found out we could! We got our 3rd row seats again this year, and we were so stoked to go!
It was freezing that day, but so worth it to be there and see our Crew boys play!! I loved seeing our newly acquired players playing with last years guys. There were 16,000 people there to cheer them on, and it made me so excited for this season! Go Crew!
Here is a layout of the day:

Washi Tape Journal
I have a new love...and it is called Washi Tape.
Everyone crafty and not are using Washi Tape for anything and everything right now. I have seen some stunning art, amazing scrapbook pages, and even a Washi wall.
Everyone crafty and not are using Washi Tape for anything and everything right now. I have seen some stunning art, amazing scrapbook pages, and even a Washi wall.
The only problem with Washi, is it can be stinkin' expensive. Like $5 a roll, expensive! Holy Cats! I can't afford that!
Lucky for me, last month I found a company called Downtown Tape, and I bought their tape for 1.99 per roll. Woot! Cheap Washi Tape! I only bought 8 rolls since I am 1) on a budget, and 2) because I could have seriously bought the whole store!
Since, I have had 8 beautiful rolls just sitting on my desk, I decided it was time that I pick what I was gonna Washi first! (Hrmm, that kinda works well as a verb)
My next door neighbor had a birthday coming up, so I decided I would start small with a card.

This is what I came up with:
Well, since I loved the card so much I decided I needed to make a journal. What for? I don't know, and I don't care as long as it is pretty! :)
I have many blank journal/sketchbooks at home.
(It may be a fetish, I will be sure to look into that)
So I grabbed a 8.5" by 6" kraft board-book sketch journal I picked up at Hobby Lobby a few months ago.

So I grabbed a 8.5" by 6" kraft board-book sketch journal I picked up at Hobby Lobby a few months ago.
Since it was a kraft color, I decided to paint the outside with a white paint wash. At this point I also realized that the band or holder on the journal was not going to work out, so I cut it off.
Then I used my Tim Holtz Distress Stain in Peacock Feathers and inked the edges of the pages to give it a neat look.
Then I grabbed 6 different Washi tapes and went to town sticking them at an angle on the book
After I was done sticking down the tape on the front and the back, I added a layer of Mod Podge to make sure everything sticks for good.
There was a ribbon holder in the book, and it was a yellow color that did not go with my theme, so I dyed that purple with some more distress stains.
Next, I took some plain and pre-colored flowers from my large stash recolored them, and glued those to the top of the journal. I then added some Hero Arts Pearls to the centers of the flowers to finish it all off.
Now I have a nifty journal to sketch all my new layouts in, or to keep track of all my new must try Pinterest projects, or to doodle in! ;) Oh who cares, it is pretty and that is all that matters to me!

Quirky Cat Scrapbook Page
I swear we have one of the quirkiest cats I have ever encountered. He thinks he is part dog, part human and loves attention from everyone! The past month I caught a few of his crazy antics with my camera and decided to created a scrapbook page about it with my new digital kit FurBabies from Kristin Aagard.

The Spoon Mirror
So a while ago I decided to be like the cool kids and I joined Pinterest. Then to make it even better, I decided to make some projects that I pinned on Pinterest. Whelp...that my friends was a bad idea.
Enter project #45676-The Spoon Mirror.
(Okay so I really haven't done that many...but you get the idea)
Enter project #45676-The Spoon Mirror.
(Okay so I really haven't done that many...but you get the idea)
I was very blessed this past December, and I got my own office at work. It was this weird green color that I helped pick out when we built our new space last Spring. Hindsight being 20/20, I so would not have picked it out had I know this was to be my office, just sayin'. It is seriously the hardest color in the world to find a good color palette for. Tomato red would have been easier, I'm serious.
After much searching, and I mean much, I found a color palette from one of my digital scrapbook suppliers Moo & Puppy Digital Paper Packs. It is the lovely colors of purple, teal and green...the same green on my wall.
How about that!
How about that!
Well since I love teal and can't live without some purple in my life, I was finally ready to make my office mine!
I started, by grabbing the following supplies:
- 1 LARGE piece of cardboard for my base
- 700 (yes 700!) Plastic spoons- brand and kind really don't matter since it is so many (this varies and depends on your base size)
- Glue Gun
- new bag of glue sticks
- 3 colors of paint- I used 1 can of spray paint and 2 small tubes of acrylic paint from the hobby store
- Wire to hang
- 10" round mirror
- Sharp scissors or snips
First I opened up my large box and drew out the circle I wanted. My mirror is roughly 35" in diameter. I also traced the mirror exactly in the center so I know where to steer clear when I was gluing. I cut out the big circle, and I spray painted the back the same light teal/blue color as the first set of spoons. I did this because the box I choose had a wild and bright design and I wanted to minimize it.
Now comes the hard and boring part. The breaking/cutting of the spoons. I suggest finding something to watch while doing this. Please note if you are breaking your spoons, do it an area where others will not get attacked by flying bits of plastic. (My cats liked this part, they were chasing plastic pieces all over the house) Cutting really is better. I started with clear spoons, because I thought spray painting the fronts and not trying to spray the backs as well was clever. Luckily, this time my crazy thoughts paid off. The teal/blue color looked the same on the front and the back even though I only sprayed the front.
Once you get your spoons cut/broke, start gluing them down to your card board. There are two ways to work the design at this point, you can glue everything up against each other and create a mirror like this:
| Image from http://www.craftaholicsanonymous.net |
Or you can leave a gap and have a more chrysanthemum type look to your mirror, like I did.
On the next row, stagger your spoons when gluing. The gap made when we started will be a good guide. Repeat until you have your mirror complete, or if you are doing a Ombre mirror like me until your first color rows are done. Again, grab a good movie, because gluing is going to take a while.
I decided that 8 rows was good for my first color, so I stopped gluing and went out side in the snow and spray painted the heck out the spoons. I also sprayed a fine layer in the center so I had a base in case you could see through the spoons.
Now it is time to paint the next layer of spoons. If they had 3 colors of blue/teal in spray paint that I could use, I would have spray painted the whole thing. Sadly, we are not at that level of spray paint sophistication yet.
I used cheap $1 plastic spoons from the dollar store for the spoons when I was hand painting. I painted all I needed for the next level, and then I started the glue thing all over again. In between each layer, I also put a coat of glossy Mod Podge on the spoons so that they have the same sheen as the spray painted ones.
Next, I hot glued the mirror in the center and started on painting the next row of spoons. Once painted I started the gluing process once again, as well as the Mod Podge layer for sheen. Since I actually butted the ends of the spoons against the mirror, I did fill in the spoon gaps on the cardboard with the dark teal paint to make it all flow together.
Now that it was all done, I realize I forgot to attach my wire through the cardboard! Whoops! So I just did a pretty ugly hot glue and duct tape job on mine. I suggest finding a better way, because I worry I will come in one morning and a broken spoon mirror will grace my office floor.
Here are some final project shots. Whaddya think of the green? ;)
Tips and tricks I learned along the way:
1. Find good shears to cut the spoons with, or if you do break them wear gloves. After breaking over 400 spoons I had a blood blister on finger the size of Texas. I cut the rest
2. Clean up all off your hot glue hairs before you spray paint. I know, that seems like a no brainer, but I was excited, and I wanted to see it colorful! If you don't you can see them... trust me.
3. Buy more spoons than you think you need. Trust me. You can use them for something else if you don't need them! I seriously had to go buy spoons 3 times!
That's about it!

Halloween Wreath DIY
I am playing catch-up on all of the projects I have been working on for the past 6 months- here is a cute Halloween wreath I made last October with a How To. :)
I love the colors of Halloween. I can't get enough of the purple, black, lime green, and neon orange everywhere! I just love the emotions and feelings of this spooky holiday! So when I found a Pinterest board devoted just to DIY wreaths, and then a Spiky Halloween Wreath! Woot! I just knew I had to make it!
So I headed to Michaels and picked up:
Assembly was pretty simple. First I placed all 300 toothpicks in the Styrofoam wreath in any direction I could make them fit. Warning: I did end up with a few injuries adding the toothpicks, and I suggest you add a hook or a bit of ribbon to hold onto after all of the toothpicks are on since it is a bit prickly after all the toothpicks are in!
Next, I took it outside and I spray painted it like crazy. This is another time when the ribbon hanger is super helpful. I had a good paint so I felt like I had good coverage with just the one can.
After it was dry, I took the foam glitter base fillers and stuck them on the toothpicks. I was super happy they were foam and they stuck right on the toothpicks and I did not have to glue any of them!
Once I was satisfied with the placement of the glittery foam thingies, I added my ribbon to the top.
I was super excited to put it on my front door, but it didn't quite fit in between the 2 doors. Oops! I guess I shouldn't have added the toothpicks to the back! I ended up hanging it in the house, and was sad to take it down when Halloween was over!
